What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

The individual performs these behaviours as a temporary means to alleviate the anxiety caused by their obsessive thoughts. It is a severe condition that requires professional care and attention to manage effectively.

Compulsion Teaser Two

The film Compulsion depicts Joe’s schoolmates paying him a visit, intending to engage in a music session. However, upon arrival, they find Joe in a flashback, struggling with a traumatic experience. To cope with and conceal his trauma, Joe, who suffers from OCD, has developed certain rituals, which include performing actions in sets of three. These include opening and closing blinds, tapping wooden beams, and switching lights on and off. These actions are performed in a specific sequence, and their repetition serves as a coping mechanism for Joe. The film effectively portrays Joe’s struggle with trauma and his use of rituals to manage his emotions.

‘Party Hat’ follows a war Veteran who is attending an engagement party for another couple and has to tackle the tricky path between reality and flashbacks.

‘Party Hat’ is a short film about a war veteran facing the challenge of attending an engagement party for another couple. Amid this social gathering, the war Veteran must confront the intricacies of reconciling with the present, reality and the haunting memories of past experiences.

The conundrum of navigating between the realms of the present and the past presents a formidable task for the veteran, requiring him to exercise great care and sensitivity in order to maintain composure and avoid potential triggers that may exacerbate his condition.

Throughout the film, we are privy to the emotional journey of a veteran as he grapples with recurrent experiences of pain, anger, and hurt. These feelings are repeatedly triggered by the unfolding events at an engagement party, which serve as a backdrop to his struggles.

We capture the war Veteran experiencing episodic lapses in mental coherence, alternating between states of clarity and dissociation. External stimuli, such as the detonation of party poppers and the release of balloons, tend to trigger these episodes. In such instances, the Veteran is transported back to a memory of cradling his best mate on the battlefield as he passes away.

At the party, despite everyone else having a good time, the man’s wife notices that he is absent-minded. She is determined to help him snap back to reality and tries her best to do so. However, despite her efforts, neither she nor their child can bring him out of his state.

Occasionally, the Veteran takes time away to allow himself some moments of solitude and not have to pretend that he’s okay for the engagement party.

As the film unfolds, keen-eyed viewers may observe the war veteran’s adornment of dog tags around his neck, a poignant emblem of his past experiences. Later revelations unveil the profound significance behind these tags—they once belonged to a dear friend who tragically perished, serving as a tangible connection to his haunting past and enduring grief.

Throughout the film, we have been tracing the journey of a character who is grappling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Despite the formidable challenges associated with producing this film, we were convinced that it was a worthwhile endeavour aimed at illuminating how PTSD is capable of affecting and triggering individuals as they navigate everyday life.

So what is PTSD I hear you say?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, impacting daily life. Treatment options include therapy and medication, aiming to alleviate symptoms and improve overall well-being for those affected by this challenging condition.

The inception of the film was initiated when our writer, Grace, serendipitously came across a GCSE poem on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that resonated with her on a personal level. This discovery served as the impetus for further exploration, and the project gradually took shape from that point onward.
